Cassopolis, MI
Jake's Country Meats is a seventh-generation family farm in Cassopolis, Michigan. Today it is run by Nick and Renee (Robinson) Seelye, while the sixth generation, Nate and Lou Ann Robinson, live in the family's Centennial farmhouse, built in the 1890s. The meat business itself began in 1998, after a crash in the hog market put the farm up for sale. Lou Ann pulled the for-sale sign out of the ground, and the family set out to build a new way to farm. They named the business after Nate's firstborn son, Jake.
The early years brought farmers markets and a partnership with Whole Foods, then another market crash in 2008 forced the family to start over. They rebuilt by selling directly to households and local businesses, and now sell every animal they raise, reaching thousands of families plus stores and restaurants in Michigan, Indiana and Illinois.
The farm raises pigs, cattle, chickens, sheep and turkeys on pasture, without antibiotics or added hormones, using rotational grazing for soil health and non-GMO grain grown on the farm. Its Duroc-Berkshire hogs and traditional cattle are chosen for flavor, marbling and hardiness. Jake's is Animal Welfare Approved, Certified Grassfed by A Greener World and MAEAP Verified, and runs The Meat Shed, a self-serve farm store in Cassopolis.
