J&J Tortilla Co. is a family tortilla maker that hand-crafts and bakes its tortillas in Michigan. The company started from a simple observation: ingredient labels on everyday foods kept getting longer and harder to read. J&J chose to go the other way, building its tortillas around short ingredient lists and a back-to-basics approach, and describes its work as food made by one family for another.
Every tortilla is made with stone-ground flour, and the company is clear that its products contain no preservatives at all, not just no artificial ones. Ingredients are non-GMO, and the organic lines use USDA Certified Organic flour and grains. The unbleached white tortillas, for example, are made from unbleached stone-ground wheat flour and are all natural.
The lineup covers whole wheat and white flour tortillas, ancient grain tortillas made with Kamut and spelt, and flavored wraps in tomato basil and spinach garlic. There is also a tallow tortilla for shoppers who want to avoid seed oils. Because the tortillas carry no preservatives, J&J recommends keeping them refrigerated or frozen. Its tortillas are sold in stores, farmers markets and some restaurants across Michigan, from Grand Rapids and the Lakeshore to Ann Arbor, Metro Detroit, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek and Northern Michigan.
