Coopersville, MI
Green Pastures is a small, family-owned and family-run organic dairy farm in Coopersville, Michigan. The family's stated aim is to farm sustainably for the next generation and to supply healthy, clean food to the surrounding community.
The farm traces its roots to 1882, when Benjamin Meerman started it. It passed through Peter, Ernest, and Steve and Sue Meerman, and is now run by Jesse Meerman, a fifth-generation dairy farmer, and his wife Betsy, who is also a physician assistant. They are raising six children. The farm ran a herd share program from 2005 to 2018, then sold its milk to Horizon Organic for several years. In 2022 the family stopped selling to Horizon so they could bring the herd share back and sell directly to local households again.
The herd share provides raw milk from grass-fed Jersey cows. Beyond dairy, the farm raises grass-fed Angus beef, with the beef cattle eating only grass, along with pastured pork from pigs that are allowed to root and are fed non-GMO grain, and non-GMO chicken. The dairy cows are pastured and graze with supplemental non-GMO grain.
