Mitchell's Patch of Blue website

Mitchell's Patch of Blue is a family blueberry farm in Bangor, Michigan, that has grown blueberries for its community since 1956. It started with four acres of bushes and has grown to 23 acres planted with seven varieties of heirloom blueberries, all Certified Organic. Kyle and Natalie Mitchell, the third generation, run the farm today. Kyle is also a professor of Agrifoods and Culinary Arts at Kalamazoo Valley Community College.

The farm is certified organic through MOSA, and it takes food safety seriously, with ServSafe and Produce Safety Alliance training and participation in Michigan's On-Farm Produce Safety program.

Because the varieties ripen at different times, the season stretches through July and into August. Earliblue comes first, around the start of July, with tart, tangy berries. Duke follows with large berries, then Bluecrop, known for a sweet to tart taste. Pemberton is a medium berry that works well for baking and drinks, while Blueray bears extra-large, sweet fruit. Rubel produces small, sweet berries, and Jersey finishes the season in August, with light blue berries that sweeten a few days after they turn color. The farm offers reserved u-pick sessions in summer and sells fresh or frozen berries at the farm in Bangor year-round.
