Twisted Tap Sugar Shack is a family maple syrup business in Caledonia, Michigan, run by three brothers who are carrying on a craft their family has practiced for four generations. The family has been making maple syrup for more than 75 years, and the brothers have added their own twist to that tradition.
The operation now spans two places: the original sugarbush in Caledonia and a 700-acre maple forest in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. There the family taps thousands of wild, untreated maple trees. Sap is collected through lines into food-grade containers during the spring thaw, then boiled down to concentrate its sugars, a process that takes 40 to 50 gallons of sap for every gallon of syrup. The syrup is filtered and bottled while hot, and everything is made in small batches.
Alongside traditional pure maple syrup, the brothers make flavor-infused syrups such as vanilla, cinnamon and fall spice, plus blends made with walnut and birch. The lineup also includes certified organic and kosher maple sugar, maple cream, pancake mix, granola and gift sets. The family describes its aim as making natural maple products while caring for the environment, supporting the local community and working with other regional producers.
